If "esperanza" is the Spanish word for hope, then bassist, vocalist and composer Esperanza Spalding could not have been given a more fitting name at birth. This year's Best New Artist Grammy Award winner, who beat out the likes of Justin Bieber and Mumford and Sons, has come a long way to find herself at the top of the jazz and instrumental music charts. The Washington Post raves "Spalding's fusion of jazz, contemporary classical and other sources, including some understated funk, is lively as it is original."
